Chapter 2

The Youngest daughter of a Conglomerate Family

Am I hallucinating? Or is this a dream?

I've become Ryu Ji-ye, the youngest daughter of a conglomerate family. Suddenly, something strange is floating before my eyes.

"...Ah. It's a dream, just a dream," I mutter to myself.

There's no way this could be true.

Now that I'm between life and death, I must be having hallucinations.

This is too dreamy for a dream.

There's no way I'll become an heiress of a conglomerate company.

Come on, these are just fantasies you entertain yourself when times are tough. When you're broke and begging for money everywhere, or fighting with your agency to let you do personal broadcasts or at least have part-time jobs... It's a fantasy you indulge in during those miserable situations.

I try to calm myself down and close my eyes again.

I'm sure that when I open them, I'll be lying in a six-bed shared hospital room, in my real body, in tatters. Or maybe in the ICU. Not in this luxurious, huge hospital room.

Whatever it is, I'll be back to my own reality.

But is this really a dream? Why does it feel so real?

I close my eyes tightly and then open them again as slowly as possible. However, what I see before my eyes isn't the dull, earth-colored reality, but something eerily blue.

Something opaque is floating in the air.

"Hmm."

Surely this should be a situation where I'd faint, but I calmly read the letters line by line. Is it because it's so surreal that I can remain this calm?

Not exactly. It's just because I don't have any options.

The large status window is blocking my view. I can't move or avoid it even if I want to because of my injuries.

I try to grasp the ideas, but I just can't. It doesn't make any sense at all. I decide to read it carefully now.

What is my dream?

My dream.

If the 'I' in this text window refers to Hong Yeo-eun, not Ryu Ji-ye, the answer is easy.

My dream has been the same for the past 10 years. It was to stand on stage again. To be able to sing again.

Haven't I dedicated my whole life just for that?

As I carefully organize my thoughts, Ryu Jae-geum, who had gone out to take a phone call, comes back into the room with the doctor and gestures towards me.

"Ji-ye, I told mom you woke up. She said she'll come by in a bit and asked if you want anything to eat?"

I quickly compose myself and speak in a gruff tone, mimicking Ji-ye.

"No. I don't like anything."

Immediately, Ryu Jae-geum's head tilts in confusion.

"...What happened? Is that true? You must be seriously ill. There's no way Ji-ye would miss an opportunity like this."

He's right. Instead of refusing food, the real Ryu Ji-ye would have listed all the things she wanted in this situation.

But now, I am not Ryu Ji-ye.

I just shrug my shoulders at Ryu Jae-geum, who's looking at me with genuine concern, and he leaves me with the medical staff.

The doctor asks me various questions to check my condition, then speaks in a very cautious voice.

"Well... I think it would be best if you stayed hospitalized for a while for treatment."​

I stare at him blankly.

He's a middle-aged doctor who looks at least twenty years older than Ryu Ji-ye, yet he's extremely cautious. He's afraid he'll speak differently than what Ryu Ji-ye want to hear.

I want to know why he's so hesitant, so I try to look at him for answers, but he averts his eyes and his gaze slowly falls.

"I think it would be better to stay in the hospital so we can constantly attend to your concerns. We'll do our best to accommodate you, so staying in the hospital would be..."

In Ji-ye's memories, he's been taking care of her health since she was young. He's been with her for at least 15 years, so he already knows her temper as well as her personality. He knows how much she hates and how frustrating it is for Ji-ye to be confined to a hospital.

That explains why the doctor is so nervous around her.

'How bad must her personality have been...?' I wonder.

I stare at the attending doctor who seems prepared to take Ryu Ji-ye's tantrums, then nod.

​"Okay. Then I'll be admitted."

"I'm sorry, I mean... What?" he asks, bewildered.

"What?" I reply.

"You said okay?"

I nod to the doctor who asks again with a surprised face.

Why? I think it's great. This is Hongjin Seoul Hospital, run by the Hongjin Group foundation. I can stay in a VIP hospital room exclusive to the youngest granddaughter of Hong Jin Group. The room could be mistaken for a hotel room as well, so it's a good deal.

Another thing is that my physical condition needs inpatient treatment anyway. Clearly, I can receive the treatment with excellent care as it's one of the best hospitals.

But the attending physician can't hide his bewildered expression.

Her? Agreeing to be hospitalized without a fuss?

I raise my chin proudly, imitating Ji-ye, towards the doctor who is still in disbelief. "Is there a problem?"

"Ah, no! Thank you. We'll do our best to serve you!"

"Oh, doctor, what are you thanking her for!" Ryu Jaegeum interjects. "I've told you many times not to do that with this kid. What has she done to deserve you bowing your head like that? She's just always causing trouble."

"Ah, no! It's not like that! Well then, I'll leave so you can rest comfortably!" The doctor finally says, then quickly disappears from the hospital room.

A person who shouldn't bow his head to anyone just bowed deeply to me, Ryu Ji-ye. Someone who was much younger than him.

'I thought it only appeared in dramas.'

Is this really what happens in the world I could only hear about? It's so unrealistic that I can't help but laugh. I don't try to hide the series of hollow laughs that come out, and then I struggle to sit up.

"Hey, careful!" Ryu Jaegeum rushes over to help me.

I guess he does care for his sister quite a bit after all. In my memories, he always seemed to nag and look down on Ryu Ji-ye.

As I lean back against the bed's headboard, I look back and forth between Ryu Jaegeum and the mission window floating next to him.

• Mission completion condition: Declare your dream to your family

If I just need to declare it, it's super easy. There's family right next to me, so I just need to say it.

Well, from Ryu Jaegeum's perspective, it'll be out of the blue, but the original Ryu Ji-ye was known for her fickle personality, so it doesn't matter.

"I've found something I want to do," I say casually towards Ryu Jaegeum.

"What? Suddenly?" Ryu Jaegeum's eyes widen, then he quickly smirks and sneers.

"What is it this time? Don't tell me you want to drop out? A world tour on a private jet? A new car? I'm telling you in advance, most of what you want usually ends at grandfather's decision."

"Just listen. I'm serious this time." I look at him with a serious face, without a hint of a smile.

Then Ryu Jaegeum, seemingly realizing that Ryu Ji-ye is different from usual, sits down in a chair with a disgruntled face.

"...You, being serious? Well, go ahead and say it."

I take a small breath and say, "I want to become a singer."

"Stop bullshitting," he replies immediately.

"I'm really not bullshitting."

I expected this, but it's so blunt that I'm at a loss for words. I hesitate for a moment, then open my mouth again.

"I'm serious."

"Can just anyone become a singer? Ji-ye, there are things in this world that can't be solved with money. One of those is innate talent. You'd be better off saying you want to go to a club. I could try to persuade our parents about that."

Ah, forget it.

I turn away from Ryu Jaegeum and look at the mission window.

'I said it anyway, didn't I?'

Whether it got through or not, I made the declaration, right?

Then, as if reading my thoughts, the letters in front of my eyes change with a cheerful sound.

Ding!

'Of course, it's a yes.'

Ding!
